Congenital Heart Disease Facts

Congenital Heart Disease Facts...

Approximately 1 in 125 babies are born with a congenital heart defect which equals all other birth defects combined...

Heart defects account for about 30% of all birth defect related deaths...

Aproximately 38% of all children with a congenital heart defect will need at least 1 surgical heart procedure in their lifetime...

Nearly twice as many children die from congenital heart disease in the United States each year as die from all forms of childhood cancers combined...

For every dollar provided by the national medical funding arm of the American government, the National Institute of Health (NIH), only one penny is provided for pediatric research, and only a portion of that penny goes to support research on heart defects, the most common birth defect...

There is no cure for congenital heart disease, it's a chronic illness that we can only hope to manage...

The cause of most congenital heart defects are still unknown...

About Us

Beats & Rhythms was founded in 2002 by a heart mom. As often happens in a lot of nonprofit cases the group just needed more time than she could give - caring for our kids is sometimes a full time job in and of itself. In 2007 another heart mom started looking for support groups and other ways to connect with other heart families in the area. Through the process of trying to start a new group Beats & Rhythms was discovered and resurrected.

In the few short months that the organization has had focus put back on it we have come a long way. Summer camp is already in the works, volunteers are ready to get busy, events are being planned and our first fund raiser is in the works. We are VERY excited to see the progress so far and can't wait to start getting our kids together to do some fun stuff.

Our volunteers are heart parents, nurses, doctors, artists and friends; all of us somehow affected by CHD. Everyone is looking forward to getting all of our activities rolling and giving these special kids some positive things to do. Please explore our site and feel free to email us with any questions that you may have.

Meet Our Kids

Putting faces to the cause. These are our kids. All of them having a congenital heart defect of some kind. Take a moment to read their stories of what they have been through.

Jayce is a middle schooler. He was born with Aortic Stenosis with a bicuspid valve that allowed blood to regurgitate (pump backwards) into his left ventricle. He also had a small ASD and a small VSD. He was diagnosed when he was 7 weeks old after being referred to a specialist from his pediatrician after he heard a "murmur". .. read more...
